Interested in photography? You might like the new "Shooting with the Nikon D800" course. There is also a new "Up and running with iCloud" course, that teaches both mac and pc users how to configure and use iCloud. You have FREE access to the entire Lynda.com library – so enjoy! "Getting Started with EndNote"

Join us for a 1 hour session on using EndNote and EndNote Web. During the hour you will learn
  • How to create and edit a reference Library 
  • How to manage databases 
  • How to "Cite While You Write" in Microsoft Word 
This session will be held on Wednesday December 19, 2012 from 10AM – 11AM in 2320 Life Sciences Building (LSB). The session will be presented by the UCLA Health and Life Sciences Library and is FREE. No RSVP necessary.

UC Information Security Awareness eCourse

We’d like to encourage all department members to take a short eCourse on information security awareness. This UC-specific course covers basic information regarding security, email, passwords, and social engineering, in addition to introducing contemporary threats and teaching good behaviors that protect information. It can be completed in about 30 minutes, and is highly recommended for anyone in today's electronic world. You can access the course from the link above.

Open Scholar

 UCLA’s Information Technology Planning Board and Office of Information Technology are sponsoring the Faculty Digital Presence (FDP) project, which gives faculty members the ability to create professional websites to showcase their scholarship, teaching, and service. The web based service used for this effort is called “Open Scholar." It allows users to customize their sites with various features such as bios, publication lists, and blogs. Outlook Tip: Add Academic dates to your EM calendar

If you'd like to add some of the important dates like the start and end of quarters to your EM calendar send an email to psychnet@psych.ucla.edu requesting the "UCLA Academic Calendar.ics" file and follow these instructions:
  1. Right click the attached “UCLA Academic Calendar.ics" document and save it to your desktop or “My Documents” and then close this message.
  2. In Outlook Menu Bar click on File and choose Import and Export. 
  3. From "Choose an action to perform" select "Import an iCalendar or vCalendar file (.vcs)" and click on Next. 
  4. In "look in" choose desktop or My Documents folder and select "UCLA Academic Calendar.ics" and click OK. 
 Do this only once or you will have multiple entries for each item. If you don't see the events on your calendar right away try rebooting your computer. If the events still don't appear, please call our help desk: 49327

Online Polling

The UCLA online polling tool is now available for faculty and staff use. You may have seen the tool in action today at the Fall Reception. Polls can be accessed from many different mobile devices and in some cases, may take the place of "clickers" in the classroom. Polls may be made public or private but must be created and managed by a UCLA faculty or staff member. If you are interested in using this service please contact Dawn Canfield (dawnc@psych.ucla.edu)

Displaying your Outlook EM Address Book

Would you like to limit the default view of your Exchange Global Address List? If you would like to browse for names just in the Psychology department, for example: • Open the Address Book from Outlook’s standard toolbar • In the address book “Tools” menu, click “Options” • Use the “Show this address list first” drop down list to specify “Psychology” You can do the same with any department listed, your own contact list, or go back to viewing the whole address list.

Mobile Apps in research

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

AWS is a collection of web services that may be of interest to faculty members, researchers, and/or their web developers. All services are billed based on usage. The UCLA campus web publisher’s group will have a meeting to discuss some of these offerings tomorrow June 20 from 1-2:30pm at the James West Alumni Center in the Collins Alumni Conference Room. Elluminate (aka Blackboard Collaborate)

Elluminate is a virtual meeting and learning environment. It can be used by members of the department for any sort of web-based, remote communication. Using Elluminate you can:
  • Hold virtual office hours 
  • Invite remote speakers 
  • Capture sessions for multiple viewings
